CHAPTER 17

LONDON, THE NEXT DAY

Richard and Stiles were extremely unhappy after learning they could not meet with Sir Dudley the moment they arrived at his office. He was and would be in court the entire day. They were told this information by his clerks, and since his son Jeremiah was with him, they had to ask for an appointment instead. His clerk after checking Sir Dudley’s appointment book said to them, “I have one opening here, for the morrow at three of the clock. Shall I put your names here sirs?”

Nodding their heads while trying hard not to allow their irritation to show, they gave him a bow and thanked the man. Soon after Richard and Stiles left for Darcy house where they would stay until after they met with Sir Dudley. They had barely made it to the drawing room at Darcy house, when the Butler announced, “Mr. Bingley to see you sir.”

He spoke to Richard who responded, “Yes please bring him in.”

Richard then gave Stiles a, ‘what now’ look. Just before a very distressed, extremely agitated Bingley was led in.

He gave them a bow before saying, “I am ruined! I am ruined!” Then he promptly sat down on the nearest chair and began to cry in a great sobbing, noisy manner.

Richard and Stiles stared at him in total shock. Before Richard walked over and shook him saying, “By Jove man! Get a hold of yourself! What has happened?”

After wiping his face with Stiles’s handkerchief, Bingley began his story saying, “The Viscount Rolland’s and his daughter have ruined me. It was all a farce you see. The Viscount’s estate River Winds was in a great amount of debt. A little over thirty thousand pounds. I…visited him while he was in prison. Where he did tell me if I paid his debt, he would grant me his daughter’s hand in marriage. And…and so I did…”

He took a swallow of the drink Richard gave him and continued saying, “He said for me to come to his estate in three days so we could sign the settlement papers.”

He wiped his eyes and nose again before continuing, “The Viscount lied to me saying he never touched his daughter’s dowry. She was to have thirty thousand pounds, but that was all he had left of his funds. Said he, if you pay off my debt in total, I shall sign the settlement papers and you shall be repaid with the same amount by receiving her dowry. When I arrived, I saw that the estate is not in such a run-down condition as I have heard while in Town. Yes, it is a little neglected. But with a few thousand pounds it could be profitable once again. Anyway, I was shown to his study where the Viscount was waiting to receive me. He said to me he would only sign the settlement papers after I burned his debt to me. Said he, it would be an act of good faith between those who would soon be family.
